Grand Opening of North Shore CrossFit in Danvers
By Naomi Peirce
High-intensity, community-focused fitness has come to Danvers.
On Saturday, North Shore CrossFit (NSCF), formerly located in Beverly and Topsfield, hosted the grand opening of their new Danvers facility. The day was celebrated with a Team Challenge competition and raffles for both members and non-members.
Eleven teams entered the competition, which began at 10 am. The Team Challenge included three WODs, “The Motherload,” “The 500,” and “WOD 3”. As participants readied themselves for competition, friends and families browsed the vendor tables and admired the new gym facilities.
“There’s a great feel about the place,” said member Scott Berger. “It’s often full of different activities. There might be a CrossFit workout, O-Lifting session, and Grid Iron Training going on at the same time.”
This opinion was echoed by others who enjoyed seeing people from different levels and programs. Friends or family who are in different workout levels can still come at the same time, which is often more convenient.
The friendly atmosphere of the gym is also appreciated by many members.
“[CrossFit] has such a great community,” said new member Liisa Hall. “It’s natural that you want to hang out with your friends and work out at the same time.”
This friendly environment was reflected in the spirited competition of the Team Challenge. Although most participants were in competition mode, there was plenty of encouragement heard from teammates, judges, and spectators.
“The Jerks,” Jimmy Hannon, Mandy Capobianco, and Adam Brown, took an early lead in WOD 1. They got through the first set of wall balls almost a minute ahead of the next team and finished in 11:13.
WOD 2, “The 500” was finished first by “Ninja Turtles” (Marco Martinez, Gregg Spiro, and Lew Conley).
The last WOD required teams to move their team gear through an obstacle course, then do a combined 3000 meter row with Burpee sprints between rowers, and finish by moving the team gear through the course once more. Starts were staggered, allowing teams that did well in the first two WODs a head start in the final round.
First place in the Team Challenge went to “The Jerks,” with a time of 18:13, “Invictus” took second with a time of 18:48, while third went to “Ninja Turtles” with a time of 19:12.
Vendors who were at the event were Hall Family Chiropractic, Paleotrition, Vita Coco, Franson Family Chiropractic, Beadcrable, and Clean Foods, a Paleolithic diet cookbook written by member Diane Frampton.
The day culminated with the Grand Prize drawing for one year of unlimited membership at North Shore CrossFit. The winner was Jake Duckworth, who had stopped by the Grand Opening to check out the gym and was not yet a member. He and his wife have since joined the CrossFit community.
The smiles and laughter mixed with frenzied cheers from members and visitors alike was a true testament to the CrossFit atmosphere: challenging, yet welcoming.
